What Makes This Room So Special

It’s got personality!

The Design world is seeing more personality than ever before; from food to fashion to home, gone are the days of the rubber stamp style. Let’s reconnect with ourselves our history and our heritage.

Design Tip #1: Ask yourself questions.

Who am I? What is important to me? To my family? What do I like to do? Where have I been? What inspires me?

Answer: I love cooking in my spare time. I can’t wait to receive the local food and restaurant publications.

I love the stories, I love the pictures, I love the inspiration.

Openly displaying the magazines I love to collect became a jumping off point for the decor for the space. They add pattern, colour and become artwork in the space.

Design Tip #2: Repeat.

My fool proof REPEAT rule:

Find a new lamp, piece of furniture , or rug you love; Repeat this colour, material or texture AGAIN in the same room. It will instantly look like it belongs there.

My husband had an old butchers block from his Grand Mothers kitchen. This piece was always “to casual” for my kitchen. By adding a rustic prep kitchen sign I was able to repeat this casual vibe. Now they both look like they belong in that kitchen, even though the rest of the space is really quite sleek and modern.

Design Tip #3: Add function.

If it doesn’t function properly, it doesn’t matter how good it looks.

Finishing off the prep zone with canisters for coffee/tea/rock sugar, a kettle and coffee add a functional restaurant vibe to this space.

The vintage teacups are openly displayed and close at hand. They can be switched out for bottle storage for an evening get together.

Voila! Your own Bistro. Now go ahead, it’s your turn to add personality to your space!
